Organizing Files and Folders and Bytes Oh MY!

Don’t you hate that moment in time when you discover something is wrong with your computer…be it PC or laptop. In my case, I am dealing with a 95% full local disk space drive and the symptoms are as follows - SLOW AS HELL. So if this happens to you here is what I suggest…either:

-Get a new freaking computer

Well I did get a new laptop a MAC Notebook…and mind you all my experience to date encompasses Windows Operating system…so making the transition from my Dell Latitude D505 (which is and has been absolutely fantastic for years now…too good for too long…I am preparing for it’s death…but it keeps going and going) as I was saying the transition from windows to Mac can be sumed up in 2 words “poignant anxiety” …ERF! Talk about a friggin cluster f*&^.

I got emails here and emails there…emails emails everywhere.

The whole point to this post…the inspiration was me cleaning off my Dell…you know the drill: going thru manillions of files and folders and deleting the largest ones usually music or that dumb porno video your friend sent you.

Organization of ones files may or may not be complicated…depends on how much shit you have…Here are some computer organization tips: (hopefully you learn something from this)

-Name all documents relative to the content and did you know there is a proper format when naming your documents whether text or image…yep, here to tell you folks that there should be no spaces or dashes instead you should use the_under_score_ (shift) + (-). Why you ask…well Ask Google Not Me!

-My biggest problem is keeping my desktop clean. I have a bad habit of saving everything to my desktop…for example I have 70 icons on my desktop now…it’s hiddeous ugly but in my defense it’s not easy keeping track of everybody’s stuff. I organize my shit like this:

The clicks go something like this:

Desktop - My Documents (Folder) - 33Queen (Folder) - 33Queen jan06 (folder) - document_name.jpg

In other words I organize all docs, files, images on a monthly basis and relative to content.

Content Management Peolple…

Oh yeah…there are a few other things i want to get off my mind before I get back to making space…

-Make Backups of important docs such as: pdf’s, images, word docs etc…either on an external hard drive or burn to disks…just in case

-Having a solid color desktop background is more functional than the image of your dog or cat…

Not sure how much a byte is… I found this interesting -

The information provided below is from Wikipedia - The Free Encyclopedia

Size Approximate storage capacity
1 Byte A single character
10 Bytes A word or two
100 Bytes A sentence or two
1 kB A very short story
10 kB An encyclopedia page
100 kB A medium-resolution photograph
1 MB A short novel
10 MB Two copies of the complete works of Shakespeare
100 MB 1 meter of shelved books
1 GB a pickup truck filled with pages of text
1 TB 50,000 trees of paper
10 TB The printed collection of the U.S. Library of Congress

Thats all for now folks!

It sounds confusing but actually it is really simple.

“With WordPress we took blogging to the next level by creating powerful self-hosted software that anyone could install and have a blog within minutes. Now with MU we’re making it as easy to create a thousand blogs as it was to create a single blog with WordPress 3 years ago. By building on the base of WordPress and syncing development, we get the benefit of the huge ecosystem in plugins and themes that has developed around the project.” - WordPress

Do you remember where you were 5 years ago today? Most of us probably don’t remember exactly where we were and what we were doing…unless it was one of those memorable occasions, such as a birthday or wedding day. Although our memories may fail us there is one thing that is contstantly consistant and certain, it is one undisputable truth or infinite eqaution that Time=Change.

The Yahoo Time Capsule is a neat way to make your mark in history; And as of this very second there are 10days 3hours and 27mins remaining to make your contribution in time.

You would think that with all this technology I could find a way to organize my life, my day, and my schedule…but I can’t. I have tried all the traditional methods like carrying a day planner everywhere I go. I have to admit how uneffective it has been because I either lose it in one of my three bags I carry or If I do find it I am frustrated at all the little pieces of paper stuck in it. My business partner suggested I use the organizational features of my Palm Treo aka Palm Terdo. Um…yeah, by the time I get the info entered the appointment has come and gone plus I’m not a big fan of the keyboard…or the wand.

I am a sucker for note pad…I use it for everything, thoughts, notes to self, client info, etc….but I have found that this particular method is not good for organizing things to-do. For example:After I write a note to self in note pad I tend to go through the notions of…Where should I save this? On my desktop? or the clients folder? maybe in my text folder in another folder for June. UUUUUHHHHH…

I have used programs such as ACT and may be looking into File Maker Pro for my business records. That’s another post!

Anyways I have installed trial calendar widgets on my desktop…which is ok, but who wants to pay for it after the trial…it’s not that great.

So here we are floppy disks, cd’s, paper calendars, pda’s and all.

Maybe The new Google Calendar can help.
